Knysna: My Favourite Coastal Town in South Africa

Tucked between lush forested hills and the Indian Ocean, Knysna is one of those places that wraps around your soul and doesn’t let go. It’s the kind of destination that feels luxurious yet local, calm yet full of character. And for me, it remains the crown jewel of the Garden Route.

Whether you’re planning a coastal road trip or just need a weekend escape that feels like a proper holiday, here’s a round-up of where to eat, explore, sip, and stroll in Knysna — based on my throwback trip that still lives rent-free in my memories.

Where to Eat

Lunch with the Locals: Bosun’s Pub

This unpretentious gem is where locals go to relax and where visitors fall in love with the comfort food and old-school charm. Think ice-cold drinks, generous portions, and that cozy “we’re-on-holiday” vibe. If you love a pub that knows how to do seafood and burgers right, Bosun’s is your spot.

Sundowners: 34° South at the Waterfront

After a day of exploring, nothing hits quite like a good cocktail with a water view. 34° South is located right on the Knysna Waterfront, with a menu full of seafood, tapas, and drinks that go down way too easily. It’s got that soft-life energy with no pretentious price tags.

Check out the view

Margaret’s Viewpoint

I stumbled on Margaret’s Viewpoint almost by accident, and now I recommend it to everyone. It’s quiet, easy to access, and gives you those panoramic lagoon views that just stop time for a moment. Go for sunrise or golden hour and thank me later.

The Knysna Heads

If Knysna had a postcard, it would be the Knysna Heads. These dramatic sea cliffs guard the entrance to the lagoon and offer multiple viewing platforms where you can breathe deep, snap that perfect pic, and take it all in. This is hands-down my favourite view in South Africa.

Must Do Attractions

Knysna Elephant Park

Want to get up close with gentle giants in an ethical and respectful way? Knysna Elephant Park offers a beautiful opportunity to feed and walk with the elephants in a natural setting. The guides are knowledgeable and the experience is unforgettable. Pure magic.

Garden Route Wolf Sanctuary

Just a short drive away is the Plettenberg Bay Wolf Sanctuary. Their mission is to care for rescued wolves and wolf dogs, and they survive on donations and community support. A visit here is both educational and emotional — and a great way to give back while you travel.

Don't miss these!

Buffelsbaai or Brenton Beach

These two beaches are pure coastal peace. Buffelsbaai is quiet and perfect for watching the waves roll in. Brenton Beach is dreamy, with golden sand and space to breathe. Bring a book, walk until your thoughts fade, or just soak in the ocean air.

Featherbed Nature Reserve

For something a bit more active, book the Featherbed Nature Reserve tour. You’ll hop on a ferry across the lagoon, enjoy a guided walk with views for days, and get a taste of Knysna’s wild side. It’s a mix of nature, views, and experience — all in one.

Knysna is the kind of place that makes you want to slow down, eat well, sip slowly, and stay longer than you planned. It’s got just the right balance of charm, scenery, and soul — and it proves, once again, that you don’t need a passport to travel well.

If you’re looking for a soft life experience on a budget, put Knysna at the top of your list.
